Post Pumpfest.....

Hey Team, hope you guys and girls are recovering well from the sun burn and what not...

CONGRATS to all prize winners and finalists!

to the rest of the team, continue to work hard and train safe and smart.

Pumpfest 2007 kind of sums up this semester competition season. Think our team's results for this string of 3 back to back competition have been very impressive. and I believe everyone is eager to train even harder after reviewing their own performances in this competition.

However, perhaps we need to take a time off to look back on the routes that we did not manage to clear and find out what went wrong and what should have been done. Don't just train and train and train. Find out what are your weakness first. (this mainly applies to novice and intermediate climbers) open cat climbers like Zhengxin (who don't need luck =), Kesheng ( who thinks he is weak) and Ningfeng shouldn't have a problem right?

Maybe its not the technique and strength. It could have been your nervousness during comp. Right?

So do take a bit of time to think through alrite? =)

As pointed out by Ningfeng, expect new and exciting changes to the team training in this coming academic year! Stay tuned ppl!

Meanwhile, rest well and climb safe!

Will it be the first deep water solo? We will see...

5th June, it comes so near. I still cant believe that finally Im going to yang shuo for real, especially after getting the 14 days of leave from my project prof. However now it hurts me so much cos I cant focus on my work le!!! Aya! anyway I decide to post sth interesting in this sleepy afternoon (although it should be working time)...... DEEP WATER SOLO

Im sure every climber want to do DWS one day except Ja sheng cos he cant SWIM haha. Just kidding. He is still the man cos he lead most of the routes for us in krabi. We used to have an opportunity to try DWS there last year. I still remember the 4 of us (alv, weimin, js and me) tying our glasses on the head and finally decide to do it. But then in the end we were told the tide is too high which maybe a bit risky :-( That's probably the only regret for me in krabi...

Then I surprisingly found that there are also some places in yang shuo are available for dws. But instead of falling into the sea, u will fall into the famous river in china- 漓江 haha

Anyway, Im so bored now that i finished almost all the articles posted in our blog before. One thing Im just wondering is that: How come Mr. Adrian still haven't produced the "water proof chalk"? I thought u r study material eng haha... we realy need that if some of us doing deep water solo one day :)

Rockmaster 2007!

In case anyone is still unaware of the Rockmaster 2007 results! Our metal winners are!

Open Women:
3rd - Kelly (will progress to 2nd in time to come)
Finalists - Baoyan, Suzanne

Open Men:
5th - Chrisster
Finalist - Kesheng

Intermediate Women:
2nd - Shumei

Intermediate Men:
1st - Ningfeng
4th - Edwin
5th - John
Finalists - Yixiang, Junwei

Think the results are pretty good and shows that the NUS climbing team can perform away from home as well! Well done everyone! Besides that, think it's great that the team has a growing presence in the Open category; maybe we'll be able to challenge SP in this area soon!

With so much potential in the team, really looking forward to Pumpfest, hope we can deliver a good peformance too! Ganbatte everyone! As a teaser, there might be lots of changes and initiatives in the coming academic year so look out for them. Plus with a new batch of team entrants coming in soon, the team will only get livelier. Haha.. Sounds so optimistic. But it is!

Train Hard, Train Safe, Train with Fun!

Home made fingerboard

John and I have been wanting to build our very own finger board to feed our obsession. And this is my result.

Materials: 1 Ikea wood board = $7
4 Ikea bookshelf mounting brackets
= $ 20
1 pair of crimps = $17
1 pair of pinches = $ 25

Total Cost: $ 73

Something to do when there's nothing else to do at home = ~priceless.

I offer my building services at $7.5/hr, materials not included.

Sin Hoe Hin Wanton Mee

The blog's been inactive for pretty long, so i think i'll post something interesting.

Monday, before training, pengyang charles and i went for a little makan trip. but what's more important is this discovery i made. it's near Climbasia, and it's damn good.

It's Sin Hoe Hin KL-Style Wanton Mee!!!

It's at 12 Rowell Road, which is just a stone's throw from Farrer Park MRT. And VERY NEAR Desker road for those interested.

It's situated in a humble and rag-tag looking shophouse, and it sells only wanton mee. that speaks a lot for the quality of the food. and as i visit the makansutra forum and local foodblogs often (that's where i found out about them), i must agree with them that this has got to be the best Wanton Mee in Spore.

The dark sauce is flavourful and not salty, the mee kia al dente with enough bite and not soggy at all, and the wantons, phwah. i'll call them giant wantons. the meat filling is not the meagre dollop you get at mediocre hawker centre stalls, it's really a lot and the water chestnut, carrot and black fungus inside just adds to the satisfaction. and i must say, it's more meat than skin! and the char siew is not those boiled-and-coated-with-red-dye kind. it's got a home made taste, exactly the same as the ones my mom makes. a hint of honey and wine, succulent and sweet.

For $3, you get 3 of these great wantons and 2 deep fried wantons which are not oily and won't give you that 'jelak' feeling from eating too much oily stuff. it's really damn good for someone who always complains about his noodles. don't order the milo peng1 though, no power at all.

next time, whoever wants to eat there can jio me. it's open from 730am to 130pm daily except tuesdays.

Video of my fav route!

Hello! Here's a video of Le Toit du Cul de Chien 7A (6C+)

It's a famous roof problem supposed to be one of the most representative of it's time in terms of difficulty and boldness. It gives climbing of 3 angles, the start, vertical, the crux, a horizontal roof; and the finish, back to the vertical.

It's not too hard, just got to make sure not to cut loose on the right hand pocket under the roof. Otherwise, you spin 360 degrees and get a 10/10 landing, woohoo! I really enjoyed this route cos of the number of people trying it with you (all the crashpads stack so high until safer than in the gym) and also it's gym like moves - big holds and slightly reachy. Also I didnt expect to finish it that day cos I was so tired so it felt really good to top!

The video is not too good, cos the sun was setting in our face..

Weimin's attempt:

Watching my videos i realised that my footwork sucks. My trailing leg is generally useless, not smearing properly and also i get kancheong after the crux when I am about to top out and often screw up then. Shits@!

What makes a good climber?

I asked myself this while i was showering.

ethics?
passion?
determination?
heart?
humility?
willingness to share?
knowledge?

of course, i don't think how strong you are applies here.
what do you think?

My stand

With so many comments bout the sad post made by Mei Fen who's graduating,

-lost world of tambun-

hey geckos~

Well as some of you might have known, i just returned from a climbing trip at ipoh last weekend. The newly-bolted crag is situated in the compound of a theme park, Lost World of Tambun: Sunway City Ipoh. I don't tink many know of the place coz we were the only people entering the theme park loaded with climbing gear and big bags, unlike most of the other visitors with their picnic baskets and floats =P

entance of Sunway City Ipoh~!

we have the meow meows to welcome our arrival

... some not so friendly monkeys as well

on our way to the crag, we met some smooching tigers (and an approching one waiting to be smooched) in the mini zoo corner

alas, the gate to our little playground~!

the "needle": one of the most photogenic limestone structures in the area

climbing the 35m "Latrine" (6b+) on the "needle". spot the climber~

Climbers Beware!!!

CAUTION!

When you are doing pullups on the fingerboard,
watch out for the edge of the campus board.

Overenthusiasm will result in burst capillaries and swelling.

Firm chest not included.

Last DaY of SchoOL... ever?

*gaspsss...* last tutorial > last presentation > last project > last lecture.. *screams* no more school?! wow.. ok i admit, i don't really like school bcos of exams, but the learning process can be pretty interesting bcos of interesting ppl and lecturers (if there are).

the flexible timings of classes, depending on whether u wanna attend lectures and tutorials; the breaks in between classes when u can catch up w frenz, bitch about the latest trends and updates on ppl; personal time to catch up on work; nap in the comfort of my hall and have yummy supper with 30+ ppl who personally cooked for the block (2 yrs back); climb in the gym with the rest who wanna look at tiles and routes on the rock wall instead of looking at words and essays on paper; go to school after morning peak hour and reach home before evening peak hour starts; go shopping without the hassle of squeezing with people on weekends.. WoOhOo~ NOT! all this is now in the past.. UGH!

absolutely impossible, unbelievable. today shall perhaps be the last time i'll be sitting in AS7 of NUS' FASS comp lab typing something with the rest of the undergraduates who are now busy rushing to complete their projects. jeez.. LaSt DaY.. EvER!? sadness.. but HaPpiNEsS for all the new uni frenz i've made here and the wonderful new found passion of climbing with the zaniest and sweetest ppl i've ever known.

THX PPL! was GREAT knowing u guys! see u soon!

what is love?

Cheap and Good.

Not a bad place for supper......
there was a night(12/04)... sandra, meifen, charlene, edwin, jiasheng, nita and kaiyin decided to go for some chicken wings....

this place is somewhere near bukit ho swee i think... ask charlene about it. apparently cherlyn and gang tried to locate it one night after training... but failed. so sad.... they were so NEAR yeeet so far......
ROJAK for $4.... erm... the you tiao is nice... can be betta thou...
Chicken Wings at $1 each. I would say it's quite nice... not too oily... very crispy!
eRm...... yup... it is good. but not to that extent. =)
the place offers economic bee hoon as well... $1 a plate. quite a big portion. the uncle gives discount as well! so guys... and girls... check this place out...i would give a 8/10. as the title of the post says CHEAP AND GOOD> hey... come on.... $1 leh... what you expect!

some nice videos

some lame jokes over here...

it would be cool if all of us could do it too!!!

Saturday, April 7

I was watching star movies today, and I thought I saw an uncanny similarity between one of our climbers and a certain hongkong actor. is it just me or.....

parlez vous anglais??

fontainebleau has been bliss so far.

We have successfully hitchhiked on every occassion we tried.

We have met and climbed with tonnes of friendly belgiums, Germans, English and French. We even joined the Oxford Brookes Climbing Club for a week of climbing while they were here and they ferried us everywhere in their minibus ..such supremely nice people

We managed to climb at quite a few different areas. [ Its different from krabi.. here the climbing sites can be 10km or more apart]

We were whipped by 4As and 5bs the first day but slowly learned how to climb here. Weimin has completed 4 7As, even flashing one of them. I have done 3 7As and a 7B+ [so powerful and intense that route was].

We have learnt to live like wild men even before the birth of fire [no stove, everyday eat bread with cheese, butter and canned food].

We got our guidebook signed by Jo montacheusse, the author of the guidebook and one of the pioneers of Fontainebleau. He is 80yrs old and he demoed to us a 7A+ without warmup. respect.

We saw Neil Gresham carrying out a masterclass for 4 students. Such a strong but humble and friendly fellow

I could really stay here for ever and ever but in 4 more days, the trip must end and the next leg to south france, spain and portugal must carry on. I will say that this is my most enjoyable climbing trip ever and i reccomend that every climber saves some money and make a pilgrimage here one day. Routes of every grade for everybody.

au voir!!

Videos...

Hey guys, here's part of what you all are waiting for - videos of Boulderactive. Unfortunately I've only gotten the Open finals up on YouTube till now, just started putting them up yesterday. Enjoy!

Links:

Saturday, March 31

'Dosage 10' is out!

If you're interested to learn how to climb better, pls head over to http://nusbactive.blogspot.com/

Do bear with, and ignore the irritating voice-over. If sound editing is used, these videos will be out during Boulderactive 2008. And if your videos are not there, then please visit the website in a week's time, bcos open categories and finals need more time. But if you still dun see your videos there after 1 wk, then it must be due to the pretty Ms E. or Ms S climbing or distracting me. Your next best option is to turn to KS, who was likely undistracted.

Its hard to be nice when you wanna complete a day's work, and no one seems to cooperate But at the end of the day, all the work's still finished. So let's all try to learn to give and take a little, and be grateful that we're all in a team as one, together. Thanks to those who came down for the gym clean up today. It was fast and fun by my own standards, and the gym looks set to welcome more hard core training!

I'm still wondering whether A and C are one; and are the guys all wearing FBTs on which day? But no matter, and I hope everyone can make full use of those videos and improve beyond the 4-Bonus-attitude. Just tell me or KS if you want or urgently need the special and limited edition portion of 'Dosage 10'.

Ms S

Mr Ong reminded me of this sentence which left deep impression in both of us.

"I dunno if I will join rock-climbing, coz I'm also interested in a number of other sports".

--- by Ms S, when she came for our climbing trial .

Now, she definitely one of us & showing all her potential in this sports. =) Good Choice.

just a quick thank you for that muchos touching phone call guys! :) growing older can be so daunting *sob*

in the words of our good ol superman

"WAH YOU'RE HOW OLD ALREADY STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN DRIVING LICENSE!!!!"

thanks ah thanks. haha

Aftermath

Arrived at gym on tuesday expecting not to see anyone, but KS was there already doing some clean-up. Guess u jus can't stop working. Going to have a debrief on thursday. Hope to do some climbing too. This year's pack up was super fast. Managed to finish by 2am (dat's wat LL told me as i had to go off to do project - e dreaded EE2001) Thanks to all who came down to help over the past 3 days - team, comm, dinos, frens, etc. Always enjoyed b-active.

Anyway I'll be uploadin climb vidz on Utube, but that gotta wait while i rush out my essay, then i'm left with 3 mods!

I realised a few very important points in order to enter finals and do well for b-active. 1)Do attend trainings regularly. 2)Ve a group of close supporters 3)Do help out in the admin for b-active 4)Do support ur team-mates.
Guess I'm only left w next yr to try out this theory. Hope it works for me. But point 2 may be a bit hard to accompolish! Oopps...
